CF03 – High speed and resolution USB 3.0 camera

The CF03 camera enables high-resolution images with 1200 × 800 pixels to be transmitted at high speed via the USB 3.0 port. Transmission rates of up to 200 frames per second (fps) at full resolution and up to 2000 fps with reduced image size enable contact angles to be measured precisely, even with rapidly evaporating liquids and absorbent samples.
The camera’s exceptionally responsive sensor is capable of detecting just a few photons, thus avoiding the need for special lighting even at high speeds.

The CF03 has been the standard camera for all our Drop Shape Analyzers since July 2015. Customers with instruments purchased after 1st January 2013 can also benefit from the camera’s enhanced performance by means of an upgrade.

CF3217 – High-speed camera for IEEE-1394 interface

The high-speed camera CF3217 is especially suitable for investigating the initial wetting by falling drops or contact angle measurements on very fast absorbing samples. With high-resolution images at up to 1000 frames/second, the camera outputs the necessary frame rate for accurately analyzing wetting processes in the millisecond range.

The sets CK3232 (for drops above 20 pL) and CK3234 (for drops above 60 pL) equip your DSA100 for precisely analyzing the wetting of tiny samples. The conversion option enables you to switch the measuring mode from conventional drop dosing to micro-drop analysis without the need for a second instrument frame.

 

The high-quality microscope lens and the set’s particularly powerful special lighting ensure a clear, sharp image of the drop. The different dosing units of the two sets produce drops from 20 pL and 60 pL respectively, which are placed with pinpoint accuracy with the help of a micro-positioning unit. A micro-sample table supplied with each unit enables the sample to be finely positioned with great accuracy. Both sets also include practical cleaning accessories with a vacuum pump to draw flushing liquid through the tiny dosing opening.

Alternatively, we have put the necessary accessories for micro-drop analyses together in the instrument configuration DSA100M.

The sets CP21 and CP22 each contain standards with shapes of exactly circular drops for calibrating the height-width method and the circle method for measuring the contact angle. The standards CP29 and CP33 are designed for calibrating the circle method for measuring contact angles in the lower range of this method. The printed shape with a contact angle of 10° is exactly circular. The deviation from the nominal value is less than 0.1°. The standard CP33 is supplied with an additional certificate which confirms the high accuracy of the print.

The calibration set CP31 comprises stainless steel balls with accurately defined radii and a correspondingly accurate surface curvature. The balls serve as models for spherically curved drop surfaces for checking  the reliability of the optical contact angle measurement using the top-view distance method. The 8 balls in the set cover the whole measuring range of the TVA100 in fine increments.

You can use the CP4501 set to regularly verify the foam height detection of your DFA100 and thus integrate your foam analyses in routine quality processes, for example. During a verification procedure the high-precision plexiglass plates, which are fitted exactly into a frame, simulate a foam column on a liquid. For this reason one of the plates is transparent and intended for the simulation of the liquid height. Five others are tinted and with exact widths of 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 mm represent the non-transparent foam respectively. The set is supplied with a certificate documenting the exact dimensions of the plates.

The drop shape standard CP70/CP70C contains an arrangement of shapes printed on one slide which accurately follow the theoretical drop shape according to Young-Laplace. Having all required drop shapes on one standard makes the calibration procedure especially easy and also allows carrying out automated calibrations.

The standard is used to calibrate the Young-Laplace method for measuring the contact angle and the surface tension. Shapes with contact angles of 30°, 60° and 120°, each for standard and microscope optics deviate by less than 0.1° from the nominal value. Equally precise are two shapes of pendant drops with nominal surface tension values of 30 mN/m and 70 mN/m with a maximum deviation of 0.01 mN/m. To support you in accurately aligning the slide to the camera, cross-wires are printed onto it on both sides.

The CP70C type of the standard additionally includes a certificate which confirms the high accuracy of the print.

Our standard CY4501 measuring column is made of high-quality borosilicate glass and is designed for accurate optical foam height measurement. Its high degree of shape accuracy and exactly observed inner diameter of 40 mm ensure good comparability of height measurements with different columns. Thanks to the groove in the stainless steel flange the column quickly engages in the right position when inserting it into the sample holder. The column is compatible with our Liquid Content Module – LCM, so it enables simultaneous measurement of foam height and the liquid content in the foam.

A standard CY4501 measuring column is included in the scope of delivery of the DFA100. The CY4503 measuring column is also available for temperature-controlled measurements.

The CY4502 measuring column can be used as an alternative to our standard column for measuring with small quantities of samples for gas foaming. High-quality borosilicate glass and the exactly observed 20 mm inner diameter of the cylinder enable accurate height measurements and with a good comparability when working with different columns. The column has a stainless steel flange with a groove designed for easy installation.

The CY4504 measuring column is also available for temperature-controlled measurements with small sample volumes.

The temperature-controllable CY4503 measuring column enables foam analyses at controlled temperatures up to 90 °C. It consists of a double-walled shell made of high-quality borosilicate glass and has two connections for introducing the temperature control medium. The column is compatible with all measuring column holders, has a grooved stainless steel flange for easy installation and can be used for gas or stirrer foaming. Measurement of liquid content is also possible in combination with our Liquid Content Module – LCM.

To simplify connection with a thermostat, we also offer the PA4501 connection set on request. Suitable thermostats are also available.

The temperature-controllable CY4504 measuring column enables foam analyses at controlled temperatures up to 90°C and with an inner diameter of exactly 20 mm is designed for small sample volumes. The temperature control medium is fed through the inside of the double-wall made of high-quality borosilicate glass via two connections. The column is intended for gas foaming and can be mounted simply on the standard measuring column holder, which is made easy thanks to the grooved stainless steel flange.

To simplify connection with a thermostat, we also offer the PA4501 connection set on request. Suitable thermostats are also available.

Working with the CY4571 prism column is the obvious choice when it comes to operating your DFA100 with our first foam software Foam Analysis. As the bubble size is not calculated absolutely in this case but relatively in pixels, the column manages without a calibration grid. Where image quality is concerned, CY4571 is equivalent to our standard CY4572 prism column. It can therefore also be used as a simplified second column for structure analyses with our new ADVANCE software after calibration has been carried out with a prism column.

Our standard CY4572 prism column enables analyses of the bubble-size distribution of liquid foams. The precision prisms on the high-quality borosilicate glass of the column enable a clear, distortion-free depiction of the 2-dimensional image of your foam sample. Thanks to the calibration grid for determining the image scale, the bubble sizes are calculated in absolute dimensions. The column is compatible with all measuring column holders and enables simultaneous calculation of the foam height and liquid content in addition to foam structure.

The DFA100 produces foam by software-controlled sparging or stirring. For other foaming methods, the short prism column CY4573 is used for structure analyses of foam manually produced inside the column or filled in afterwards. Like the standard prism column CY4572, the short prism column CY4573 has a calibration grid in order to measure bubble size in absolute dimensions with the Foam Structure Module – FSM.

Our specially developed Micro Dispensers equip the K100 for measuring the critical micelle concentration (CMC) with the utmost precision, using one or two Dispenser units (DS0810 or DS0820). The surfactant concentration range is set up and measured fully automatically.

Working with two Micro Dispensers, where one dispenses the liquid and the other extracts the same volume, has great advantages. This enables a very wide concentration range with a high density of measuring points to be created in order to measure the CMC with high accuracy. Wrong measurements due to a too highly concentrated parent solution are virtually ruled out, as it can be diluted by several orders of magnitude and the CMC measured with high probability.

Our multi-dosing units DS3222 to DS3228 equip the DSA100 for the fully automatic dosing of 2 to 8 liquids. The motorized lift automatically actuates the dosing height or places the drop carefully on the sample. The software organizes even highly complex dosing and measuring sequences and, when combined with motorized axes, enables solids to be analyzed fully automatically. For example, the surface free energy of a solid can be determined based on contact angles with several liquids in a single measuring sequence.

The uniform dosing feed has a large dynamic range (10 to 1400 µL/min with a volume resolution of 0.1 µL). It can be set to a very slow speed in order to accurately measure the advancing angle and the receding angle. On the other hand, service functions, such as filling a syringe, are carried out very quickly.

An additional manual syringe can be used for other substances, for example for measuring surface tension or analyzing contaminating liquids.

In addition to the dosing unit, the following components are also included in the scope of supply:

We have designed the dosing unit DS3241 specially for analyzing the wetting and surface tension of melts at temperatures between 50 and 400 °C. The melting cylinder is conveniently filled in the cold state and then heated rapidly in a controlled way. Dosing is carried out precisely with the help of a micrometer screw, thus easily producing a drop of the desired size.
The DS3241 is ideal when used in combination with the temperature controlled chamber TC21 for temperature control of samples to measure the contact angle.

Our DS3252 double-dosing module performs fully automated surface free energy (SFE) determinations, using an automation program in our ADVANCE software. The dosing unit has two pressure dosing mechanisms working in parallel, each simultaneously dispensing one drop of the test liquids water and diiodomethane onto the sample.

For carrying out the drop shape analysis, the image field of the high resolution camera is split into two video windows for viewing both drops at the same time in order to analyze the drops in parallel. The software then uses the resulting contact angles to calculate the SFE of the solid. The entire process, from the point when dosing starts up to the SFE calculation, is fully automatic and complete within a second. For this innovative measuring method, we hold a patent regarding the novel dosing technology.

The kinetic energy of the dosing process – despite its speed – is equivalent to gently dispensing a drop from a dosing needle. Most importantly, this noncontact method eliminates the risk of contamination or damage caused by inadvertently touching the sample. Cartridges, that operators can remove quickly and fill directly with test liquids, make the dosing system easy to handle. One filling is enough for approximately 1000 SFE determinations.

The dosing unit DS3252 requires our CF03 USB camera.

In addition to the dosing unit, the following components are also included in the scope of supply:

  • 10 cartridges with Luer-Lock connector: 5 transparent for water and 5 brown for diiodomethane

DS3270 – Oscillating Drop Module

The module DS3270 is used for analyzing drops to measure interfacial rheological properties of liquids. In doing so, the change in the surface tension or interfacial tension is measured as a drop specifically changes in size. The magnitude of the change is mathematically divided into an elastic and viscous component (elasticity and viscosity modulus). The results provide information on the mechanical and time-dependent stability of foams, films and emulsions.

During the measurement, a pendant drop is produced, the size of which is changed periodically with accurately controlled amplitude and frequency. The module's piezo unit produces an exactly sinusoidal oscillation which guarantees a reliable evaluation. The instrument's camera then records a video of the oscillating drop with very high image quality. This video is automatically evaluated, frame by frame, to precisely calculate the elasticity and viscosity modulus.

The DS3270 module is already included in the instrument DSA30R, which we have specially put together for interfacial rheology.
