KB0803 – Touch panel with integrated measuring sequences

The intuitive operability of the KB0803 touch panel enables computer-independent measurements with integrated programs for the most important tensiometric methods as well as determination of density. A simple touch of the finger starts the measuring programs, the parameters of which we have optimized for the most frequent situations. These parameters can also be flexibly adjusted and applied as a user-defined standard. A program for quality assurance of transformer oils in accordance with ASTM D-971 is also integrated.

The touch panel also has a vast working memory with access to a very large number of storable measurements. It can also create comprehensive and clearly arranged measurement reports which it can either store or send immediately to a printer. Individual measurements can also be output simply in an Excel-compatible format. It is also possible to copy data from the touch panel onto a USB memory stick for easy export.

Our Liquid Content Module – LCM measures the liquid content of foams with the aid of ME4510 to ME4512 conductivity electrodes. Seven electrode surfaces of absolutely equal size are arranged at exactly the same distances from each other and so reflect the conductivity and liquid content accurately in dependence on height. An eighth surface serves to capture the conductivity of the liquid sample necessary for this measuring method. The electrode surfaces are made of a thick, mechanically stable layer of gold, whose normally long service life depends on the properties of the samples. The sets can be ordered with different numbers of electrodes depending on the changing cycles required:

  • ME4510: 1 electrode pair (1 pair included in the scope of delivery of the LCM)
  • ME4511: 5 electrode pairs
  • ME4512: 10 electrode pairs

The NE4501 dosing needle makes it especially easy to fill the sample into the measuring column without any premature foam formation. When the 11 cm stainless steel needle is attached to the SY4501 syringe it enables the liquid to run down the inner wall of the column, for example, slowly and without turbulence. One NE4501 dosing needle is included in the scope of delivery of the DFA100.

The choice of a suitable needle diameter maximizes the accuracy of surface and interfacial tension measurements using the Pendant Drop method.
For this purpose, the needle set NE96 (top picture) contains stainless steel needles with a length of 38 mm and different outside diameters (0.5/1.0/2.0/3.0 mm), in order to achieve an ideal drop shape for analysis in every measuring range.In the set NE93 (bottom picture), the four different needles are also PTFE-coated and optimize the analysis of liquids with good wetting properties. The coating prevents external wetting of the needle and ensures absolutely symmetrical drop shapes.

The set NE97 with three J-shaped needles has been put together especially for measurements with the Captive Bubble method and with rising drops. The 0.5 mm diameter needle enables highly energetic, structured or pre-wetted surfaces (e.g. contact lenses) to be analyzed. With two further needles (1.0 and 2.0 mm), the interfacial tension can be measured on rising drops. This enables systems such as crude oil/water, in which the lighter phase is not transparent, to be analyzed optically.

The tilting device PA3220 is our special unit for the flexible analysis of inclined surfaces. Measuring the resulting drop deformation and the tilt which leads to the drop running off enables conclusions to be drawn relating to roughness and adhesion. The roll-off angle is informative for ultrahydrophobic samples and is accurately measured with slow tilt movements.

As the whole instrument is tilted, the surface is always in the same position relative to the lens. This makes the video evaluation very easy, and changes in the drop can also be tracked visually. Almost all other measuring methods and options provided by your instrument can be used without changing the setup.

We have developed the internal tilting table PA3240 (in the photo fitted to a DSA30) for software-controlled wetting analyses on inclined surfaces with high dosing flexibility. With this tilting solution, the dosing unit remains vertical, thus enabling drops to be deposited or dropped onto the already inclined surface in a defined way. This is a common method for measuring the roll-off angle. The system also analyzes drop deformation equally reliabley.

The low weight enables angular resolution, precision and possible tilt speed to be maximized. The internal table PA3240 is also ideal, when little space is available for the frame of an external tilting device.

The modification of wetting properties in an electric field (electrowetting) is used for innovative technologies such as liquid lenses and special displays. The set PA3250 makes it possible to measure the contact angle with a voltage applied. This is achieved by voltage limiters (250 V) for DC and AC, insulators for the sample table and dosing unit, and connecting cables with crocodile clips. This makes it easy for you to use your intended voltage source for electrowetting analyses.

The viewing lens PA3235 simplifies the dosing of picoliter drops at the required sample position with pinpoint accuracy. The tilting device PA4020 is our special unit for the flexible analysis of inclined surfaces with the DSA25. The tilt which leads to the drop running off as well as the advancing and receding contact angle of the moving drop lead to conclusions concerning roughness and adhesion of the sample.

Furthermore, the roll-off angle is informative for ultra­hydrophobic samples and is accurately measured with slow tilt movements. To determine this parameter precisely, our ADVANCE software detects the coordinates of the three-phase points, which indicate the position of the drop in the camera image. The change in these coordinates can be measured accurately, yielding an objective criterion for detecting the roll-off angle.

As the whole instrument is tilted, the surface is always in the same position relative to the lens. This makes the video evaluation very easy, and changes in the drop can also be tracked visually. Almost all other measuring methods and options provided by your instrument can be used without changing the setup. The tilting movement and related measurements can be embedded in automatic measuring sequences.

If it is not possible to setup the DFA100 where it is shielded from bright external light, you can still ensure optimum conditions for optical foam height detection by using the PA4502 light shield. This accessory has sides made of dark tinted PMMA all round that render the LED panel of the instrument the sole source of light, thus optimizing the electronic capture of the liquid/foam and foam/gas transitions. The quickly mounted light shield is compatible with all glass columns from CP4501 to CP4504 and enables tempered measurements including the capture of the sample temperature when combined with the optional TP4501 temperature sensor.

The height detection of the DFA100 determines the upper and lower foam height and therefore calculates not only the exact quantity of the foam formed, but also captures the drainage as well. The alternative PA4510 lighting module with infrared LEDs makes all this possible for foam from non-transparent liquids, where the lower foam boundary (liquid/foam) is otherwise difficult to detect. It takes no time at all to replace the standard lighting with the special LED panel.

Foam behavior with gases such as nitrogen or CO2 can differ considerably from foam formation and stability with air. You can equip your DFA100 with a PA4530 external gas connection in order to simulate technical processes involving these gases. This also expands the flow rate range of your instrument so you can foam with air in very small rates of down to 0.05 L/min.

Your instrument can be converted quickly and simply to allow it to introduce the connected gas through the sample by means of accurate electronic flow control. In this way you can create exactly repeatable foaming conditions.

As the plate is made of the precious metal platinum it has an extremely high surface free energy and therefore also the required excellent wetting properties. These are further optimized by its homogenously roughened surface.

A simple clamping mechanism allows especially fast insertion of the plate. Its safe storage is assured through a high-quality protective box provided.

A PLC01 version of the plate with a certificate from an independent testing institute is also available.

The micro sample table PS3240 enables samples to be positioned under software control when analyzing solids with picoliter drops. You can incorporate the movement of the sample table in the x- and y-direction into semi-automatic sequences, for example for a series of contact angle measurements along a conductor path. With a resolution of 1 µm and a position deviation of less than 0.02 % over the whole travel length of 50 mm, the required position is achieved with the utmost precision.
