With the comprehensive range of accessories for our Dynamic Foam Analyzer – DFA100, you can not only extend the scope of your instrument, but also adapt its setup to your required measuring conditions such as temperature or available sample volume.

Column holders

The measuring column holders of your DFA100 are modules with a plug connection to the measuring instrument that can be exchanged quickly and simply. They offer diverse foaming possibilities in order to simulate different technical foam-forming processes. At the same time they ensure optimum tightness against liquids in inserted measuring columns.

SH4511 – Measuring column holder for gas foaming

The SH4511 measuring column holder has a coupling that quickly connects it to the gas supply of the DFA100 when inserted. The column clicks into position by means of a metal pin, which is a particular advantage for foam structure analysis where the alignment to the camera is important. After that, fixing the column and inserting the holder in the instrument is a matter of seconds, thanks to the simple clamping mechanism and the ergonomic handle of the holder.

The column holder SH4511 is compatible to older column models which were intended for the precursor SH4501. One SH4511 holder is included in the scope of delivery of your DFA100. It is practical to use additional measuring column holders, so that further measurements can be prepared while one measurement is being carried out. Two FI4531 silicone sealing rings for aqueous solutions are included in the scope of delivery of the SH4511. Seals made of other materials for organic liquids are also available.

SH4512 – Column holder for foaming with a stirrer

The plug-in SH4512 column holder enables foaming of the sample with a stirrer. The holder is easily inserted to connect the integrated stirrer motor to the electrical connection of the DFA100. Mounting the stirring head on the embedded shaft is just as quick, as is attaching the measuring column with the aid of two exactly-fitting clamps.

The stirrer is software-controlled, has a speed of up to 8000 rpm and excellent synchronization characteristics thus ensuring a high level of repeatability during foaming. An FI4511 seal made of silicone rubber for aqueous samples and a standard stainless-steel two-bladed stirring head are included in the scope of delivery. Seals for organic liquids and stirring heads with other geometries are also available.

SH4503 – Universal column holder for manual or external foaming

SH4503 – Column holder for manual or external foaming

The SH4503 measuring column holder offers flexible possibilities for measuring foam height using manual foaming methods such as stirring from above or shaking. The sliding holding clamps can easily accommodate measuring columns of varying sizes such as the CY4501 or CY4502. Alternatively you can also use different closed-bottom vessels of virtually any diameter and foot shape that can be clamped into place securely with this holder.

Two different-sized silicone sealing rings for aqueous solutions are included in the scope of delivery of the SH4503. Seals for organic liquids are also available.

Filters and stirrers for foaming

One of the strengths of the DFA100 is the high level of repeatability it offers during foaming using different methods. To achieve this, the measuring column holders are combined with filters or stirring blades in various shapes and sizes that are compatible with the respective measuring columns.

You can use a large variety of filter plates (figure to the left shows a selection) for foaming-up your samples by sparging. All of them have a glass filter, which is embedded in a stainless steel socket that makes inserting the filter into the sample holder very easy. With different defined pore sizes ranging from large to extremely small it is possible to create different bubble sizes depending on the foaming process to be investigated or adapted to the foamability of your sample. The diameter of the filter plate is either 30 mm for the standard-sized measuring columns or 14 mm for columns that are used for small sample volumes. Depending on materials used for embedding the filters, they are appropriate for different kinds of liquid.

FL4551 – Paper filters (1,000 pieces)

The use of a FL4551 filter paper is particularly recommended for foaming in the case of severely soiling samples. The filters are available in pack sizes of 1,000 pieces. The paper is made of chemically pure cellulose, is compatible with our measuring columns with an inner diameter of 40 mm without having to be cut to size and can be used with most liquids. The pore size is 12 to 15 µm, about the same porosity as our FL4534/FL4538 glass filters.

The use of a paper filter requires a filter holder FL4550.

SR4501 – Two-bladed stirring head with anti-adhesion coating

The SR4501 stirring head is the standard accessory for the SH4512 measuring column holder with stirring device. The symmetry and shape accuracy of the stirring blade ensure excellent repeatability of the foaming conditions. The stable anti-adhesion coating prevents the foam-forming substances from sticking and enables trouble-free foaming without any interactions with the surface of the stirrer. The stirring head is included in the scope of delivery of the SH4512, but can also be ordered separately.

Identical in shape with the standard SR4501 stirring head, the SR4502 stirring head is made of stainless steel and electrolytically polished. The surface is very corrosion resistant and prevents biomaterial from sticking. For this reason this accessory is especially suitable for medicine and food applications.

The modular SR4520 stirring head offers flexible possibilities for foaming using the SH4512 measuring column holder. The stirring heads can be exchanged quickly and simply enabling your DFA100 to be set up ideally for changing samples and tasks. The SR4520 stirring head and the following three stirring blade modules are available separately:

  • SR4531: Vertical four-blade stirrer made of PTFE
  • SR4533: Diagonal four-blade stirrer made of PTFE
  • SR4535: Spiral stirrer made of polished stainless steel

Measuring columns (room temperature operation)

Our range of measuring columns means you can set up your measurement variably in line with the task of the analysis. In addition to our standard column for foam height measurement we also offer columns in different sizes that can be adapted to the sample quantity available as well as special columns for optical foam structure analysis.

Our standard CY4501 measuring column is made of high-quality borosilicate glass and is designed for accurate optical foam height measurement. Its high degree of shape accuracy and exactly observed inner diameter of 40 mm ensure good comparability of height measurements with different columns. Thanks to the groove in the stainless steel flange the column quickly engages in the right position when inserting it into the sample holder. The column is compatible with our Liquid Content Module – LCM, so it enables simultaneous measurement of foam height and the liquid content in the foam.

A standard CY4501 measuring column is included in the scope of delivery of the DFA100. The CY4503 measuring column is also available for temperature-controlled measurements.

The CY4502 measuring column can be used as an alternative to our standard column for measuring with small quantities of samples for gas foaming. High-quality borosilicate glass and the exactly observed 20 mm inner diameter of the cylinder enable accurate height measurements and with a good comparability when working with different columns. The column has a stainless steel flange with a groove designed for easy installation.

The CY4504 measuring column is also available for temperature-controlled measurements with small sample volumes.

Our standard CY4572 prism column enables analyses of the bubble-size distribution of liquid foams. The precision prisms on the high-quality borosilicate glass of the column enable a clear, distortion-free depiction of the 2-dimensional image of your foam sample. Thanks to the calibration grid for determining the image scale, the bubble sizes are calculated in absolute dimensions. The column is compatible with all measuring column holders and enables simultaneous calculation of the foam height and liquid content in addition to foam structure.

A CY4572 prism column is included in the scope of delivery of the Foam Structure Module – FSM.

The DFA100 produces foam by software-controlled sparging or stirring. For other foaming methods, the short prism column CY4573 is used for structure analyses of foam manually produced inside the column or filled in afterwards. Like the standard prism column CY4572, the short prism column CY4573 has a calibration grid in order to measure bubble size in absolute dimensions with the Foam Structure Module – FSM.

Working with the CY4571 prism column is the obvious choice when it comes to operating your DFA100 with our first foam software Foam Analysis. As the bubble size is not calculated absolutely in this case but relatively in pixels, the column manages without a calibration grid. Where image quality is concerned, CY4571 is equivalent to our standard CY4572 prism column. It can therefore also be used as a simplified second column for structure analyses with our new ADVANCE software after calibration has been carried out with a prism column.

Temperature-controllable columns and temperature sensor

You can reconstruct the thermal process conditions in a foam experiment with the aid of temperature-controlled measurements and correlate the results using recorded data from our electronic sensor.

The temperature-controllable CY4503 measuring column enables foam analyses at controlled temperatures up to 90 °C. It consists of a double-walled shell made of high-quality borosilicate glass and has two connections for introducing the temperature control medium. The column is compatible with all measuring column holders, has a grooved stainless steel flange for easy installation and can be used for gas or stirrer foaming. Measurement of liquid content is also possible in combination with our Liquid Content Module – LCM.

To simplify connection with a thermostat, we also offer the PA4501 connection set on request. Suitable thermostats are also available.

The temperature-controllable CY4504 measuring column enables foam analyses at controlled temperatures up to 90°C and with an inner diameter of exactly 20 mm is designed for small sample volumes. The temperature control medium is fed through the inside of the double-wall made of high-quality borosilicate glass via two connections. The column is intended for gas foaming and can be mounted simply on the standard measuring column holder, which is made easy thanks to the grooved stainless steel flange.

To simplify connection with a thermostat, we also offer the PA4501 connection set on request. Suitable thermostats are also available.

TP4501 – Temperature sensor

TP4501 – Temperature sensor

The TP4501 is a highly accurate temperature sensor which can be used flexibly with your instrument. Thanks to a large measuring range at 0.1 °C precision, the sensor measures room temperature just as reliably as the working temperature when using accessories for temperature control. Measurement is carried out immediately at the sensor tip, thus reproducing the actual conditions directly where it is positioned in the liquid sample. Our software links the temperature to the current analysis results.

To simplify connection of your temperable CY4503 or CY4504 measuring column, we offer the PA4501 connection set on request. It is equipped with durable seals and screw connections on the measuring column side, while high-quality stainless steel quick-lock couplings ensure liquid-tight connection to the thermostat.

Accessories for verifying and optimizing height detection

You can calibrate the accurate optical foam height detection of the DFA100 with special accessories or optimize it in special cases, such as opaque liquid samples or unfavorable external lighting conditions.

You can use the CP4501 set to regularly verify the foam height detection of your DFA100 and thus integrate your foam analyses in routine quality processes, for example. During a verification procedure the high-precision plexiglass plates, which are fitted exactly into a frame, simulate a foam column on a liquid. For this reason one of the plates is transparent and intended for the simulation of the liquid height. Five others are tinted and with exact widths of 30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 mm represent the non-transparent foam respectively. The set is supplied with a certificate documenting the exact dimensions of the plates.

If it is not possible to setup the DFA100 where it is shielded from bright external light, you can still ensure optimum conditions for optical foam height detection by using the PA4502 light shield. This accessory has sides made of dark tinted PMMA all round that render the LED panel of the instrument the sole source of light, thus optimizing the electronic capture of the liquid/foam and foam/gas transitions. The quickly mounted light shield is compatible with all glass columns from CP4501 to CP4504 and enables tempered measurements including the capture of the sample temperature when combined with the optional TP4501 temperature sensor.

The height detection of the DFA100 determines the upper and lower foam height and therefore calculates not only the exact quantity of the foam formed, but also captures the drainage as well. The alternative PA4510 lighting module with infrared LEDs makes all this possible for foam from non-transparent liquids, where the lower foam boundary (liquid/foam) is otherwise difficult to detect. It takes no time at all to replace the standard lighting with the special LED panel.

Upgrades and extensions

You can retrofit your measuring instrument to include methods for measuring liquid content or foam structure – or to analyze foam behavior in an enlarged flow rate range as well as with the gases nitrogen and CO2.

Foam behavior with gases such as nitrogen or CO2 can differ considerably from foam formation and stability with air. You can equip your DFA100 with a PA4530 external gas connection in order to simulate technical processes involving these gases. This also expands the flow rate range of your instrument so you can foam with air in very small rates of down to 0.05 L/min.

Your instrument can be converted quickly and simply to allow it to introduce the connected gas through the sample by means of accurate electronic flow control. In this way you can create exactly repeatable foaming conditions.

Highly foaming samples already start foaming while being filled into the column, which impairs the subsequent measurement. The printed scale on our SY4501 disposable syringe means you can measure the sample quantity exactly and allow it to run down the side of the column slowly and without bubbles. Filling is even simpler with our additionally available long NE4501 stainless steel syringe needle. There are ten SY4501 syringes included in the scope of delivery of the DFA100 and they can be ordered in sets of 25.

The NE4511 dosing needle makes it especially easy to fill the sample into the measuring column without any premature foam formation. When the 100 mm stainless steel needle is attached to the SY4501 syringe it enables the liquid to run down the inner wall of the column, for example, slowly and without turbulence. One NE4511 dosing needle is included in the scope of delivery of the DFA100.

Regular and thorough cleaning of the filter plates used for foaming is essential to ensure a long service life and the same consistent gas permeability. Our T04511 cleaning set helps here. The filter plates are placed in the holder of the set, which must be connected to the suction flask included in the scope of delivery. Once vacuum is applied, a flushing liquid can be sucked through the pores of the filter and into the flask. This ensures effective cleaning of the entire filter surface.

For producing the vacuum, the VP01 vacuum pump is available.

The vacuum pump VP01 is a useful aid which can be used with many of our measuring instruments for the following purposes: 

  • Degassing of liquids for picoliter dosing units or for interfacial rheology to prevent the formation of troublesome air bubbles (with additional connector set SP01)
  • Removal of dosed drops when measuring contact angle to enable several positions along the optical axis to be analyzed (with additional connector set SP01)
  • Flushing the tiny dosing opening of picoliter dosing units (with additional connector set SP01)
  • Producing the vacuum for fixing foils and films for the suction table ST01

ME4510 to ME4512 – Pairs of conductivity electrodes for liquid content

Our Liquid Content Module – LCM measures the liquid content of foams with the aid of ME4510 to ME4512 conductivity electrodes. Seven electrode surfaces of absolutely equal size are arranged at exactly the same distances from each other and so reflect the conductivity and liquid content accurately in dependence on height. An eighth surface serves to capture the conductivity of the liquid sample necessary for this measuring method. The electrode surfaces are made of a thick, mechanically stable layer of gold, whose normally long service life depends on the properties of the samples. The sets can be ordered with different numbers of electrodes depending on the changing cycles required:

  • ME4510: 1 electrode pair (1 pair included in the scope of delivery of the LCM)
  • ME4511: 5 electrode pairs
  • ME4512: 10 electrode pairs

Accessories for the sample holders' predecessor models SH4501 and SH4502

For the first models of the sample holders used for foam formation by sparging and stirring, i.e. the sample holders SH4501 and SH4502, compatible accessories are still available.

Our range of 50 mm glass filter plates with different pore sizes means you can influence the bubble sizes of your foam and optimize the analysis for different ranges of foamability and foam stability. The material is chemically neutral in contact with almost all liquids. Our optional TO4501 cleaning set also ensures a long service life. The filter plates are compatible with the SH4501 measuring column holder and all measuring columns with an inner diameter of 40 mm.

The filter plates that can be ordered individually have the following pore sizes:

  • FL4501: 100 to 60 µm
  • FL4502: 40 to 100 µm
  • FL4503: 16 to 40 µm
  • FL4504: 10 to 16 µm

For measuring columns with an inner diameter of 20 mm we provide various, mostly chemically neutral glass filter plates with a diameter of 24 mm for the foaming of small sample quantities. You can influence the bubble size with the filters in dependence on their pore size and align the analysis to different ranges of foamability and foam stability. To use one of the filter plates, a PA4504 adapter set is required.
