Advanced Surface Science Workshop 2024

The workshop aims to update and broaden the participants' knowledge and practical expertise in the field of surface science. It also seeks to connect industrial partners and experienced users to new opportunities for their business and interpersonal skills.

Each session in the workshop is facilitated and mentored by world-renowned experts in the field, representing either academia, industry or research institutes. The academic champions will focus on the fundamental aspects of the subject, addressing knowledge gaps and importance. During the event, experts and participants will come together to discuss ongoing issues and opportunities in the field. In one-on-one discussions, both parties will collaborate to find a collective solution to any problems participants may be experiencing with their application. Additionally, if necessary, training will be provided on how to properly use the instrument.

The event is organized to cater to the needs of current or potential users of these tools based on their areas of interest. It covers two topics over three continuous days, starting with the liquid-fluid interface characterizations (interfacial Tension - IFT) on Day 1, followed by solid-liquid interface characterizations (Wettability & Adhesion) on Day 2. On Day 3, there will be a consultation day and hands-on time with multiple instruments. Participants are encouraged to bring their own samples for testing during these sessions. Each day will include theoretical background, industry challenges with real-case studies, and practical/demo sessions. At the end of each day, the panel discussion is dedicated to strengthening the interaction between all stakeholders. Experts in the respective areas will provide theoretical background at the beginning of each day.

Presenter

Prof. Prashant R. Waghmare

Associate Professor & Dean Carleton University

Dr. Waghmare's doctoral degree was in the field of capillarity and wetting. In 2018, Dr. Waghmare has successfully established a Surface Science Hub for Clean Technology (SSH-CT) at the University of Alberta and his core area of research is droplet dynamics and interfacial fluid dynamics.

Prof. Alidad Amirfazi

Professor, York University

Dr. Alidad Amirfazli's research in surface engineering focuses on droplet surface interactions for various applications. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Surface Engineering, with extensive international collaborations and twice receiving NSERC’s DAS Grant. Before Lassonde, he co-founded the Energy Club at the University of Alberta. He has also served on APEGA's Board of Examiners and as a consultant for companies.

Aline Barbar

Technical Sales Representative, KRÜSS, Canada

Aline Barbar is a Technical Sales Representative for KRÜSS for the entire territory of Canada, direct from Montreal. A biochemist researcher, having completed her PhD at Laval University in Quebec City, Aline chose to transition into the field of sales of products and equipment for scientific support in 2014. The dynamic of creating scientific business relationships and meeting people from different fields with different values and cultures brings her great satisfaction.

Dr. Thomas Willers

Head of Applications & Science, KRÜSS, Germany

Dr. Thomas Willers studied physics in Cologne and Barcelona. He received his PhD degree in experimental physics at the University of Cologne, Germany. In 2012 he joined KRÜSS GmbH at its headquarters in Hamburg where he is now head of the department of Applications & Science. He is responsible for the KRÜSS Application Labs as well as teaching activities and has more than seven years' experience in teaching  surface science.

Dr. Daniel Frese

Application Market Manager, KRÜSS, Germany

Dr. Daniel Frese received his PhD in Biophysical Chemistry at the University of Göttingen, Germany, in 2013. Since 2014 he has been an Application Specialist at KRÜSS GmbH, Hamburg, Germany. Dr. Frese has been working together with key companies and research centers in the fields such as coating technology, surfactant research, and inkjet printing, just to name a few; building solid experience in surface and interface science.
