The manual lifting table (z-axis) PS3202 is the easy to be used positioning solution for rapidly adjusting the sample height. The high-ratio precision drive ensures that ample force is transmitted effortlessly and accurately, even for positioning heavy samples (up to 5 kg). The table can be combined as required with manual or software-controlled axes to move the sample in the three spatial directions.

As a manual positioning table for adjusting the sample height, the PS3205 is designed for particularly heavy loads. Samples of up to 10 kg are moved effortlessly to the required height by means of the precision high-ratio drive with its comfortable crank. The lift table can be combined outstandingly well with manual or software-controlled horizontal axes. It is also designed for special accessories such as temperature controlled chambers.

Controlled with precision by our software, the lifting table PS3250 provides flexible options for automating your measurements. The sample moves to the required dosing height as part of the rapidly created measuring procedure. Drops dispensed by the dosing needle can also be collected automatically for particularly low-dynamic wetting. The PS3250 is ideal for combining with horizontal motorized axes. The table moves loads of up to 10 kg and is therefore also laid out for heavy samples and for environmental chambers.

ST3200 – Standard sample table support

The adapter ST3200 is a sample table support for manual or software-controlled z-axes. It is securely assembled to the axis in a few easy steps and forms an absolutely flat table surface. An engraved grid helps you to position the sample accurately. Flexibly deployable holding clamps prevent the sample from shifting.

Horizontal movement of the sample table makes it possible to set up many dosing positions on the sample precisely and without contact. For this purpose, the different-length manual axes PS3210/PS3211/PS3212 can be flexibly mounted for movement in or perpendicular to the camera viewing direction. They can also be used in combination for both directions. The fine drive with smooth-running crank ensures that the sample is positioned accurately with little effort.

The sample table PS3246 is designed for the ultra-precise positioning of small samples. Manual fine drives for the x- and y-direction enable the table to be moved to the required measuring position with pinpoint accuracy.

The different-length axes PS3260/PS3261/PS3262 move the sample to the required dosing position under software control and with very high resolution. Two combined axes can access every position on a sample area of up to 170 × 350 mm. Quickly created procedures incorporate the axis control into fully automatic analyses such as the precise determination of surface free energy. Position-dependent measurements of the contact angle (mapping) are also possible, for example for checking the homogeneity of a sample.

PS3270 – Software-controlled rotation axis

The software-controlled rotation axis PS3270, in combination with a motorized horizontal axis, moves samples precisely to the required position. Rapidly created software procedures incorporate the table movement into fully automated sample analyses such as determining the surface free energy. Position-dependent measurements of the contact angle (mapping) can be carried out just as easily, for example for checking the homogeneity of a surface.

As ideal supplements for the rotation table, the ST3210 vacuum table for soft and bendable samples and/or the ST3271 wafer tabletop for the analysis of wafer surfaces are available.

The tilting device PA3220 is our special unit for the flexible analysis of inclined surfaces. Measuring the resulting drop deformation and the tilt which leads to the drop running off enables conclusions to be drawn relating to roughness and adhesion. The roll-off angle is informative for ultrahydrophobic samples and is accurately measured with slow tilt movements.

As the whole instrument is tilted, the surface is always in the same position relative to the lens. This makes the video evaluation very easy, and changes in the drop can also be tracked visually. Almost all other measuring methods and options provided by your instrument can be used without changing the setup.

PA3240 – Internal Tilting Table

We have developed the internal tilting table PA3240 (in the photo fitted to a DSA30) for software-controlled wetting analyses on inclined surfaces with high dosing flexibility. With this tilting solution, the dosing unit remains vertical, thus enabling drops to be deposited or dropped onto the already inclined surface in a defined way. This is a common method for measuring the roll-off angle. The system also analyzes drop deformation equally reliabley.

The low weight enables angular resolution, precision and possible tilt speed to be maximized. The internal table PA3240 is also ideal, when little space is available for the frame of an external tilting device.

The sample table support ST13 for our tilting tables PA3240 and PA4240 simplifies the positioning of small samples up to 50 × 50 mm. The adjusting screw moves the support plateau to the required dosing position with pinpoint accuracy. Fitting of the support is flexible to enable movement perpendicular to or along the camera viewing direction.

The vacuum table ST3210 has a permeable tabletop through the pores of which samples are drawn homogeneously on a large area of 150 × 220 mm. The table ensures a flat and easy-to-analyze surface when carrying out measurements on films as well as samples with only low elasticity or softness. It can be mounted flexibly on horizontal movement axes or (with DSA100 and DSA30) on a rotation axis. A vacuum pump, which is required for operating the table, can be obtained from us.

We have designed the tabletop ST3271 to optimize sample preparation and surface analysis of wafers. The plate has a slot for positioning, which is compatible with the standard sizes of wafer tips. To facilitate centering the samples, the table surface can be easily adapted to the different standard sizes of wafers as well as other round samples by means of flexibly deployable pins.

The ST3271 wafer tabletop can be placed directly on top of a manual rotation axis PS3271, or on a software-controlled rotation axis PS3270 in order to carry out automated sample analyses.The ideal way to use the wafer table setup lies in combining it with a vacuum table ST3210. The vacuum of this accessory is effective through holes in the wafer tabletop in order to hold the samples firmly in position.

ST10 – Set for measuring contact angle in bulk liquid

We have developed the sample holder and dosing set ST10 for measuring contact angle in a bulk liquid phase. Gas bubbles (Captive Bubble) or drops are dosed beneath the sample with the help of the set’s special needle and cuvette, e.g. for analyzing hydrogels and highly energetic and structured surfaces. The special holders optimize measurements on contact lenses, films and textiles as well as on rigid samples.

The suction plate ST01 ensures that a smooth, flat surface is achieved with foils, films and similar samples. This guarantees a reliable and precise measurement of the contact angle on such soft, flexible materials. The wide area of 100 × 100 mm creates space for a large number of dosed drops. A vacuum pump, which is required for operating the plate, can be obtained from us.

The powder sample holder ST03 is a sample table adapter with three depressions for measuring the contact angle on powder beds. The depressions are filled with powder which is then smoothed out resulting in flat surfaces for dosing liquids. The three separate areas enable at least three positions to be analyzed without being affected by adjacent drops, even in the case of absorbent powders. We have designed the special sample holder ST04 for measuring contact angle on foils and paper. The clamping device ensures an ideally smooth, flat surface, even with corrugated and rolled samples. The holder takes samples with a surface area of 80 × 80 mm and a thickness of up to 4 mm.

When measuring the contact angle on uneven samples, dosing must be carried out on a raised point in order to obtain an analyzable shadow image of the drop. For this purpose, the sample table adapter ST08 has a domed shape, over which the samples are tightened with the help of a magnetic clamping device. Combining with horizontal axes enables several measurements to be made in quick succession by dosing accurately along the crest.

The special sample holder ST09 simplifies the contact angle measurement for round samples such as glasses or tubes. The holder can be flexibly matched to the shape of your sample with the help of variably adjustable, sliding pins. Mounting on horizontal axes enables you to move the peak of the sample to the required dosing position accurately and conveniently.

With the dosing unit DS3205, drops of a single liquid can be manually dosed in a simple way. The slowly advancing forward feed with a micrometer screw ensures that dosing is carried out gently and the shape of the drop is not mechanically affected. The high-quality glass syringe SY20 is suitable for almost all substances and also enables low-viscosity liquids to be dosed in a controlled manner. Tubeless direct dosing and the option of using disposable syringes make the dosing unit suitable for hazardous substances and contaminating liquids.

In addition to the dosing unit, the following components are included in the scope of supply:

Our multi-dosing units DS3222 to DS3228 equip the DSA100 for the fully automatic dosing of 2 to 8 liquids. The motorized lift automatically actuates the dosing height or places the drop carefully on the sample. The software organizes even highly complex dosing and measuring sequences and, when combined with motorized axes, enables solids to be analyzed fully automatically. For example, the surface free energy of a solid can be determined based on contact angles with several liquids in a single measuring sequence.

The uniform dosing feed has a large dynamic range (10 to 1400 µL/min with a volume resolution of 0.1 µL). It can be set to a very slow speed in order to accurately measure the advancing angle and the receding angle. On the other hand, service functions, such as filling a syringe, are carried out very quickly.

An additional manual syringe can be used for other substances, for example for measuring surface tension or analyzing contaminating liquids.

In addition to the dosing unit, the following components are also included in the scope of supply:

Our DS3252 double-dosing module performs fully automated surface free energy (SFE) determinations, using an automation program in our ADVANCE software. The dosing unit has two pressure dosing mechanisms working in parallel, each simultaneously dispensing one drop of the test liquids water and diiodomethane onto the sample.

For carrying out the drop shape analysis, the image field of the high resolution camera is split into two video windows for viewing both drops at the same time in order to analyze the drops in parallel. The software then uses the resulting contact angles to calculate the SFE of the solid. The entire process, from the point when dosing starts up to the SFE calculation, is fully automatic and complete within a second. For this innovative measuring method, we hold a patent regarding the novel dosing technology.

The kinetic energy of the dosing process – despite its speed – is equivalent to gently dispensing a drop from a dosing needle. Most importantly, this noncontact method eliminates the risk of contamination or damage caused by inadvertently touching the sample. Cartridges, that operators can remove quickly and fill directly with test liquids, make the dosing system easy to handle. One filling is enough for approximately 1000 SFE determinations.

The dosing unit DS3252 requires our CF03 USB camera.

In addition to the dosing unit, the following components are also included in the scope of supply:

  • 10 cartridges with Luer-Lock connector: 5 transparent for water and 5 brown for diiodomethane
  • 10 disposable syringes (1 mL) with Luer connector

The precision glass syringe SY20 is used for our manual dosing unit DS3205 or software-controlled dosing units D03211/DO4011 for one liquid. The gas-tightness of the syringe plunger and the Luer-Lock connector ensure that drops are dosed in a controlled manner even with low-viscosity liquids.

With our software-controlled multi-dosing units, the SY22 syringe is responsible for the controlled production of the required drop volume. To this end, the gas-tight syringe plunger is motor driven to force the liquid out of the syringe into the dosing tube. The SY22 is easily fitted to the dosing unit by means of a thread.

The syringe SY3601 can be fitted to many of our manual and software-controlled dosing solutions and can be used for almost all liquids. It is particularly suitable for dosing highly contaminating substances such as adhesives or paints. The Luer connector ensures safe, gas-tight connections to needles and other dosing components. The syringe is supplied in sets of 100.

The choice of a suitable needle diameter maximizes the accuracy of surface and interfacial tension measurements using the Pendant Drop method.
For this purpose, the needle set NE96 (top picture) contains stainless steel needles with a length of 38 mm and different outside diameters (0.5/1.0/2.0/3.0 mm), in order to achieve an ideal drop shape for analysis in every measuring range.In the set NE93 (bottom picture), the four different needles are also PTFE-coated and optimize the analysis of liquids with good wetting properties. The coating prevents external wetting of the needle and ensures absolutely symmetrical drop shapes.

The needle assortment NE94 provides a range of suitable needles for measuring contact angle as well as surface and interfacial tension (SFT/IFT) using the Pendant Drop method. The set NE97 with three J-shaped needles has been put together especially for measurements with the Captive Bubble method and with rising drops. The 0.5 mm diameter needle enables highly energetic, structured or pre-wetted surfaces (e.g. contact lenses) to be analyzed. With two further needles (1.0 and 2.0 mm), the interfacial tension can be measured on rising drops. This enables systems such as crude oil/water, in which the lighter phase is not transparent, to be analyzed optically.

The needle NE50 with 5 µm internal diameter has been designed for the manual dosing of small volumes below the microliter range. The water-repellent surface lets drops detach easily from the needle and allows to place them accurately in the required position on your sample. The glass cuvettes SC01 and SC02 accommodate the bulk phase when measuring the interfacial tension using the Pendant Drop method. When measuring surface tension, the cuvettes screen the dosed drop against air currents. With the smaller cuvette SC01 (top picture), this is also ensured by an additional cover which additionally prevents the drop evaporating. The smaller cuvette SC01 can be used when taking measurements in a temperature controlled chamber for measuring interfacial temperature as a function of temperature.

Because of its larger design, the SC02 (bottom picture) is particularly suitable for measuring the contact angle in the bulk liquid. Both cuvettes are made of high-quality optical glass. As a result, drops are displayed without distortion, thus guaranteeing an accurate analysis of the drop shape.

The temperature controlled chamber TC11 has been specially developed for measuring the contact angle on large samples at temperatures of up to 130 °C. The slide-in sample tray is conveniently loaded outside the chamber and can be moved from the outside when the chamber is closed and at the required temperature. Small samples are prevented from shifting by means of removable holding clamps. The front viewing window simplifies dosing in the required sample position.

TC21 – Temperature controlled chamber for high temperatures

The temperature controlled chamber TC21 enables liquid and solid surfaces to be analyzed at temperatures up to 400 °C. The target temperature is easy to specify and is reliably achieved at defined heating rates. The chamber’s excellent insulation ensures stable equilibrium during the measurement. With the help of the accurate temperature sensor, the current value is recorded by the software together with the contact angle or the surface tension. The wettability of solid samples can be reliably analyzed at temperatures up to 90 °C with the help of the temperature controlled chamber TC30. The well-sealed and insulated plastic housing and a copper heat-conducting hood ensure stable thermodynamic equilibrium. Gas purging of the viewing window is effective against condensation. The dosing position can be conveniently adjusted from the outside when the chamber is closed and at the required temperature.

With rapid temperature changes between -30 and 160 °C, the temperature controlled chamber TC40 is our flexible solution for wettability analyses under different thermal conditions. The insulating plastic housing and a heat-conducting copper  hood ensure a uniform, stable internal temperature. A gas flow can be connected in order to avoid condensation and icing of the viewing window. The dosing position is conveniently adjusted from the outside when the chamber is closed and at the required temperature.

The unit TC3213 provides temperature control of liquids for measuring contact angle or surface tension at up to 130 °C. Embedded in a heat-conducting metal sleeve, the filled syringe quickly reaches the desired temperature. With the help of a sensor, the temperature is measured directly at the syringe and assigned to the measurement in the software. The unit is easy to fit and ideally complements your software-controlled or manual single dosing unit.

DS3241 – High-temperature dosing unit

DS3241 – High-temperature dosing unit

We have designed the dosing unit DS3241 specially for analyzing the wetting and surface tension of melts at temperatures between 50 and 400 °C. The melting cylinder is conveniently filled in the cold state and then heated rapidly in a controlled way. Dosing is carried out precisely with the help of a micrometer screw, thus easily producing a drop of the desired size.
The DS3241 is ideal when used in combination with the temperature controlled chamber TC21 for temperature control of samples to measure the contact angle.

The wettability of a surface is affected by the climatic ambient conditions. Using the humidity chamber HC10 in combination with a temperature controlled chamber TC30/TC40 enables you to measure contact angles at precisely controlled humidity and temperature.

At temperatures above 50 °C and humidities above 65%, we recommend using the optional insulating hood TC3200 (bottom picture). This hood enables the target humidity to be reached even more quickly and maintained with better stability.

  • Relative humidity (without insulating hood): 15 - 85% at 22 °C, up to 89% at 10 - 15 °C, up to 5% at 70 - 90 °C
  • Time to achieve target value: 20 - 300 s
  • External compressed air supply required (3-6 bar, very dry air). A suitable compressor is available from us.
  • Temperature range between 5 and 90 °C (suitable thermostats are available)

The TP20 is a highly accurate temperature sensor which can be used flexibly with your instrument. Thanks to the large measuring range between -50 and 400 °C at 0.1 °C precision, it measures room temperature just as reliably as the working temperature of our accessories for temperature control. Measurement is carried out immediately at the sensor tip, thus reproducing the actual conditions directly at the solid or in the liquid sample. Our software links the temperature to the current analysis results.

CF03 – High speed and resolution USB 3.0 camera

The CF03 camera enables high-resolution images with 1200 × 800 pixels to be transmitted at high speed via the USB 3.0 port. Transmission rates of up to 200 frames per second (fps) at full resolution and up to 2000 fps with reduced image size enable contact angles to be measured precisely, even with rapidly evaporating liquids and absorbent samples.
The camera’s exceptionally responsive sensor is capable of detecting just a few photons, thus avoiding the need for special lighting even at high speeds.

The CF03 has been the standard camera for all our Drop Shape Analyzers since July 2015. Customers with instruments purchased after 1st January 2013 can also benefit from the camera’s enhanced performance by means of an upgrade.

CF3217 – High-speed camera for IEEE-1394 interface

The high-speed camera CF3217 is especially suitable for investigating the initial wetting by falling drops or contact angle measurements on very fast absorbing samples. With high-resolution images at up to 1000 frames/second, the camera outputs the necessary frame rate for accurately analyzing wetting processes in the millisecond range.

In some cases, such as non-reflecting or uneven samples, the image of the drop does not stand out sufficiently from the background. In order to improve the analysis in such cases, the sample can be additionally illuminated with the help of the cold light source IL10. The flexible swan neck for the lamp and the fine regulation of the luminous intensity enable the direction, angle of incidence and brightness to be adjusted to exactly suit the particular situation.

Calibration standards

With our calibration standards you can check the accuracy of the drop shape analysis carried out by your instrument and validate the optical measuring equipment. The standards consist of glass slides with modeled drop shapes which have been accurately calculated and printed with high precision.

The drop shape standard CP70/CP70C contains an arrangement of shapes printed on one slide which accurately follow the theoretical drop shape according to Young-Laplace. Having all required drop shapes on one standard makes the calibration procedure especially easy and also allows carrying out automated calibrations.

The standard is used to calibrate the Young-Laplace method for measuring the contact angle and the surface tension. Shapes with contact angles of 30°, 60° and 120°, each for standard and microscope optics deviate by less than 0.1° from the nominal value. Equally precise are two shapes of pendant drops with nominal surface tension values of 30 mN/m and 70 mN/m with a maximum deviation of 0.01 mN/m. To support you in accurately aligning the slide to the camera, cross-wires are printed onto it on both sides.

The CP70C type of the standard additionally includes a certificate which confirms the high accuracy of the print.

The sets CP21 and CP22 each contain standards with shapes of exactly circular drops for calibrating the height-width method and the circle method for measuring the contact angle. The standards CP29 and CP33 are designed for calibrating the circle method for measuring contact angles in the lower range of this method. The printed shape with a contact angle of 10° is exactly circular. The deviation from the nominal value is less than 0.1°. The standard CP33 is supplied with an additional certificate which confirms the high accuracy of the print.

With high-quality microscope lenses, precise picoliter dosing solutions and innovative special accessories, we enable wetting analyses to be carried out on minute samples such as conducting paths or tiny grid points.

The sets CK3232 (for drops above 20 pL) and CK3234 (for drops above 60 pL) equip your DSA100 for precisely analyzing the wetting of tiny samples. The conversion option enables you to switch the measuring mode from conventional drop dosing to micro-drop analysis without the need for a second instrument frame.

 

The high-quality microscope lens and the set’s particularly powerful special lighting ensure a clear, sharp image of the drop. The different dosing units of the two sets produce drops from 20 pL and 60 pL respectively, which are placed with pinpoint accuracy with the help of a micro-positioning unit. A micro-sample table supplied with each unit enables the sample to be finely positioned with great accuracy. Both sets also include practical cleaning accessories with a vacuum pump to draw flushing liquid through the tiny dosing opening.

Alternatively, we have put the necessary accessories for micro-drop analyses together in the instrument configuration DSA100M.

The micro sample table PS3240 enables samples to be positioned under software control when analyzing solids with picoliter drops. You can incorporate the movement of the sample table in the x- and y-direction into semi-automatic sequences, for example for a series of contact angle measurements along a conductor path. With a resolution of 1 µm and a position deviation of less than 0.02 % over the whole travel length of 50 mm, the required position is achieved with the utmost precision.

The viewing lens PA3235 simplifies the dosing of picoliter drops at the required sample position with pinpoint accuracy. An additional camera captures an enlarged live image of the sample so that the position of the dosed, microscopically small drop relative to the sample is easily visible. This accessory therefore helps you to adjust the position of the dosing unit and the sample table. The viewing lens PA3235 can be easily retrofitted to your instrument for micro-drop analysis.

The fiber holder ST06 enables fibers to be conveniently positioned for measuring the contact angle with picoliter drops. The exactly horizontally clamped sample with a thickness of up to 700 µm can be rotated, thus enabling several measurements to be taken in one position. Unwanted wetting along the fiber by dosed drops is prevented, as the sample does not come into contact with an underlay. Components for interfacial rheology

With the help of interfacial rheological measurements carried out with your DSA100, you can investigate surface or interfacial tension characteristics while precisely controlling the change in size of an interface. The results of the analysis provide information on the stability of foams, emulsions and liquid films.

The module DS3270 is used for analyzing drops to measure interfacial rheological properties of liquids. In doing so, the change in the surface tension or interfacial tension is measured as a drop specifically changes in size. The magnitude of the change is mathematically divided into an elastic and viscous component (elasticity and viscosity modulus). The results provide information on the mechanical and time-dependent stability of foams, films and emulsions.

During the measurement, a pendant drop is produced, the size of which is changed periodically with accurately controlled amplitude and frequency. The module's piezo unit produces an exactly sinusoidal oscillation which guarantees a reliable evaluation. The instrument's camera then records a video of the oscillating drop with very high image quality. This video is automatically evaluated, frame by frame, to precisely calculate the elasticity and viscosity modulus.

The DS3270 module is already included in the instrument DSA30R, which we have specially put together for interfacial rheology.

Components for the top view distance method

Our own top view distance method (Top View Analysis, TVA) measures small contact angles particularly accurately and enables analyses to be carried out in depressions and on concave surfaces. The TVA measuring head is available as a stand-alone measuring instrument or as a modular accessory for your DSA100.

The TVA100 module equips your instrument for carrying out surface analyses using the top view distance method. The measuring head’s precision dosing feature produces a drop with defined volume. Two diodes with an accurately adjusted spa­cing illuminate the drop from above. A camera monitors the reflected light points, the spacing of which correlates to the contact angle. By measuring from above, surfaces in depres­sions or concave samples can be analyzed. Instruments with this patented measuring method can be obtained only from us.

The easy fitting of the module enables a rapid changeover between top view distance measurement and conventional contact angle measurement from the side.

You can use the connector set SP01 in conjunction with the vacuum pump VP01 which we supply:

  • Degassing liquids. The interfacial rheology module and our micro dosing units work even more reliably if no air bubbles can form during the measurement.
  • Drying and cleaning micro dosing units. The dosing unit’s tiny opening can easily be dried or flushed with the help of a vacuum pump.
  • Removing dosed drops when measuring contact angle. Removing analyzed drops enables further drops to be dosed in the camera viewing direction without superimposed drop images interfering with the evaluation.

The operation of the picoliter dosing unit can be affected by particles of dirt on the piezo tip or in the dosing channel. The set SP02 contains 10 micro filters and 20 tips which you can use to keep the dosing liquid reliably free from particles. The lint-free absorbent cotton buds and cloths included in the set ensure that the dosing tip is properly cleaned from the outside. One unit of SP02 is supplied with your picoliter dosing unit.

We have prepared the two sets SP3201 and SP3202 with 25 mL storage bottles especially for use in your multi dosing unit. As well as a gas-tight screw cap, a cap with an opening and a silicone seal with a hole for the dosing tube are also included. The bottles have a magnetic bottom which attaches to the base plate of the measuring instrument.

The two sets with tubes for multi dosing units each contain two suitably tailored tubes made of chemically resistant PTFE in each of three colors. We have already fitted the tubes for the dosing needle with needle heads, which are simply clicked into the rotating carrier of the dosing unit. Two fittings for liquid-tight connection to the dosing valves are supplied for each tube color. The different tube colors enable the dosing lines to be quickly associated with the syringes and appropriate test liquids.

The modification of wetting properties in an electric field (electrowetting) is used for innovative technologies such as liquid lenses and special displays. The set PA3250 makes it possible to measure the contact angle with a voltage applied. This is achieved by voltage limiters (250 V) for DC and AC, insulators for the sample table and dosing unit, and connecting cables with crocodile clips. This makes it easy for you to use your intended voltage source for electrowetting analyses.
